GTA 4 NAT/Router too strict

26 October 2008 4,360 views 2 Comments

Have you ever had this problem? I purchased GTA 4 when it first came out sometime in April. Unfortunately I never had Xbox live hooked up to try multi player. Now that my live account is back in action, it seems like I keep getting errors. Some NTA/Router is too strict message keeps appearing every time I logon to multilayer. If you are recieving the same message DON’T WORRY. It can be fixed. Save yourself the hassle of going through all the xbox configurations in your dashboard. Call your ISP and have them walk your through configuring the modem to allow connectivity. Most likely you will have to go to your ISP site and enter your IP and do a small re config. Your ISP should be able to walk you through this in a matter of minutes.

I do have some beef though with RockStar games. After all this is TrashVent and we have to find something to smash. For whatever reason the servers you end up gaming on are EXTREMELY unstable. You will notice connectivity issues and from time to time the servers will just drop you. It is irritating and may force you to throw your system out the window. But its still worth it to get online when you can and cause some mayhem. Happy hunting gamers and go destroy the city… hahaha

Here’s the **OFFICIAL** response from Rockstar Games:

In order to play GTA IV via the PS3 network you will need to open the
    > following ports on your router or modem:
    >
    > UDP ports:
    >
    > 6672, 28900
    >
    > TCP ports:
    >
    > 8001, 27900

So..for what I did is this:

    1. Log onto my router
    2. Define an IP address based on the MAC address of the PS3 (Read your router help/manual for this). This ensures that when I start the PS3, it always is given the same IP address by the router. My router DHCP address range starts at 12.0.0.1, and I set the PS3 at 100 – so it always gets 12.0.0.100
    3. Set up port forwarding to include the above ports to the address that you give your PS3 in step 2
    4. There is no step 4! That’s it.

I researched loads of forums before I raised a support call with Rockstar games. Some forums were advising to put the PS3 in a DMZ. This is NOT advisable because it effectively opens your PS3 up to hackers!!!
